Bartender- a poem

The bartender knows your secrets

She accepts them with the extra tip

you slide across the sticky bar

as she sloshes a bit of foam

from the top of your next beer.

She's lost count of how many you have had

and nods as you pour out your tale of "woe-is-Me"

But she's heard it before

From countless customers

who look and sound just like you

She smiles and you convince yourself

that she really likes you

that you are different from all the others

who have asked her out

"after work"

She smiles

accepts another tip

and files away your story

for the novel she is writing.
